Error messages use jargon that assumes knowledge of technical details

Like all popular commercial software packages, it has its detractors as well as supporters. Critics emphasize that there are dedicated email clients that are simpler, more intuitive and have a lower purchase price. Proponents emphasize that richer capabilities and advanced programmability are available, that purchase price is a small fraction of total cost of ownership. There remain subtle irregularities in user interface behaviour and algorithms that continue to earn the client some disdain from many day-to-day users. Common criticisms of the product includes:

Up to and including Notes 4, there was a single Notes online help file, which contained help for users, programmers and administrators. Often, an end user searching for information on how to use a certain feature would find instead information on how to program it. Even clicking on the Help button from some Notes dialog boxes would lead to information on how to write Notes code to call up that dialog, rather than help on how to use it. Notes 5 (1999) addressed these problems by spliting the help files out in to seperate ones for users, programmers and administrators, and also by removing the unhelpful Help buttons from the dialogs.
